Zucchini Health Overview

Overall, zucchini has very few health concerns. Keep in mind that while zucchini is not necessarily unhealthy it does not provide as much nutritional value as other common veggies like carrots or cabbage. Below are some note-worthy nutritional details on zucchini:

Very Alkaline

Raw zucchini is very alkaline and has an average pH value of 9.0. This makes zucchini a good choice when your beardies meal is too acidic as the high alkaline levels will help reduce the meal's acidity and lower the risk of stomach irritation.

Poor Calcium to Phosphorus Ratio

Zucchini has roughly twice as much phosphorus as it does calcium. Phosphorus blocks calcium absorption so you will need to provide your beardie with additional calcium whenever you serve zucchini.

How to Prepare Zucchini

Zucchini is safe to feed to bearded dragons once per week without any major health concerns. You should serve zucchini with other veggies high in calcium like mustard greens or collard greens to offset any calcium deficits and make the meal more nutritious. Follow the preparation instructions below to correctly sure serve zucchini to your beardie.

Zucchini Preparation

Thoroughly wash zucchini before preparing to remove any dirt, chemicals, or debris the veggie may have come in contact with. Bearded dragons do not eat cooked zucchini so you will need to remove the peel as it will be too waxy for them to digest safely. Dice or grate the zucchini into pieces no larger than the distance between your bearded dragon's eyes. Serve with other veggies high in calcium.
