Cabbage is a very vegetable and that has no major health issues. We only found one minor health concern with cabbage.

High Goitrogen Levels

Goitrogens are chemicals produced by some plants and can impact thyroid health when consumed frequently. Cabbage is high in goitrogens so it should it should not be fed to your beardie too frequently. Try to feed your bearded dragon cabbage no more than 3 days per week. This will help reduce any negative long-term effects the goitrogen may cause.

Types of Cabbage

Most cabbage has similar nutritional benefits. So whether you use red cabbage, purple cabbage, or green cabbage is up to you. Try to avoid any frozen or cooked cabbage as these often have salt or other additives which are not ideal for bearded dragons.

How to Feed Cabbage to Bearded Dragons

Cabbage is fairly easy to feed to bearded dragons and can safely be served a few times per week. Bearded dragons prefer raw cabbage so it should be served uncooked.

Cabbage Preparation

Cabbage can quickly be prepared and served to bearded dragons. Below are the main steps:

  • Thoroughly wash the cabbage to remove any loose debris and chemicals it may have come in contact with during transportation and storage.
  • Remove any stalks or stems that are too stiff for your bearded dragon to eat.
  • Cut the remaining leaves into pieces small enough your bearded can eat them without choking. A good rule of thumb is no piece should be larger than the distance between your beardies eyes.
